“I still have a lot of things to say
Shakira’s new interview about her upcoming album + familyQ: After recording ‘Try Everything’ and ‘La Bicicleta’, it gave your public a chance to reconnect with your music. How hard was it to leave your family setting to retake your musical career?
S: It’s a complicated process and if I didn’t have Gerard’s support doing it would be almost impossible. My body and spirit are asking me to stay with my kids but there’s another part of me that obligates me to work and to reconnect with my passion, which is music. Q: Did you at any given point consider postponing your 9th album indefinitely?
S: No, I always knew I would be back. [Making music] is nonnegotiable and a necessity for me. I’ve taken my time because I feel that everything comes at it’s given time, and my kids at this stage of their life need me a lot, but I now have started writing songs again.Q: A star like yourself with worldwide fame isn’t a stranger to the constant dilemma that many women face when it comes to motherhood…
S: It’s always difficult for women to reach and maintain a balance and everyone has the right to look for that balance between their family and professional life, but for that to occur the whole family has to be involved with their heart and soul (God bless my in-laws ! ) In my case, Gerard is excited for me to go back to do music, and knows that I still have a lot to say and offer with my music. Q: What does this stage of your life signify to you?
S: I have the certainty that motherhood is the hardest job I’ve ever had in my life! I could do 12 hours of press, 10 hours filming a music video, be 8 hours straight in the studio, but nothing leaves me more exhausted than running after my kids all day. The amount of energy a mother has to have for her kids is unmatched. You have to have all your senses concentrated on them to be alert so they don’t fall or get hurt, be there for their emotional needs, their nutrition, their education, which at the end of the day takes a toll. By 11pm what I yearn the most is finding my bed and a good pillow.Q: What about Gerard?
S: He’s the same. He says he doesn’t get as tired not even after he’s played 2 hours against Real Madrid!Q: Going back to your new album, we’re intrigued about what style of music you’re going to come out with…
S: Going back to work has been difficult but I’ve been creating a lot lately and starting to pave the way and feel very inspired. What style the album is going to take? I don’t even know that right now. For now i’m just digging inside myself, writing sincere, happy, dance-able, deep - a little bit of everything… I’m looking and finding [a style].Q: When this album sees the light of day, you will have reached 40. Did you ever imagine when you started your career, that you would be this successful?
S: I never imagined a number at that time, but I always dreamed of something like this. I’ve had the blessing of partner of life that’s always by my side and has given me beautiful sons.Q: Does reaching 40 mark anything special for you?
S: There’s still a couple of months to go and i’ll let you know when I get there (laughs). In reality I feel very vital. And if one can keep on creating in peace and being happy then let the years keep passing.Q: We’ve been able to hear that during the Olympics, that athletes from different nationalities, have used your songs for their routines during their presentations.
S: It’s always a joy to find that you’re part of peoples life. That’s the fundamental purpose for those of us that make music.
